An Interview with Jim McGeorge

Jim McGeorge

What is your background Jim?

I've worked in construction industry sales since 1969. I worked for Keyline and other builder's merchants and manufacturers, and I was in the Royal Engineers for 9 years in the 1960s, serving in Singapore, Germany and the UK.

I was approached by Flexseal to cover the Scotland area 18 years ago, as I had knowledge of the builders merchant and drainage industry. I also had extensive site experience, which helped with my day-to-day duties as the Area Sales Manager.

What is your role at Flexseal?

I manage the sales of all Flexseal products in Scotland, including our flexible couplings range, channel drainage, lateral connections and plumbing couplings. I also work with systems available from our sister company, Fernco Environmental.

I'm particularly interested in the larger civils projects. A recent one was the Magnum coupling used in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games regeneration project. Seeing Flexseal products being used on these large projects makes the team's hard work worthwhile, particularly when it is for the benefit of the area.

What are the highlights of your career at Flexseal?

The highlight has to be helping shift Scottish ground workers to using Flexseal FA150B saddle connections, instead of using a clay saddle to connect into large diameter concrete pipes. The process started around 10 years ago soon after the product was introduced. Initially sales were limited so generating the interest and demand was important. Now the product is the market leading lateral connection.

How do you see the future of the industry, particularly in Scotland?

Of course the economy has been difficult over the past few years with the recession, mainly with house building in Scotland flat lining. However, there are still big contracts out there. It'll be some time yet before we get back to 2008 levels, but I will continue to do what I can to promote Flexseal products in Scotland. The longer term future is bright.

What are your interests outside of your work?

I enjoy classical music and opera. I'm going to see Tosca, a Puccini opera, in Glasgow in May with my wife. I've also got a grandson who is 5 (going on 45), and he's already an expert on our saddle connection range! My favourite place to go on holiday is Rome, and I also have an interest in WWE wrestling - favourite wrestler is definitely Randy Orton!

Any final comments Jim?

I'd just like to say thanks to the merchants and the contractors I've worked with during my career at Flexseal. We will continue to work together for mutual benefit, and I'm very much looking forward to the future. I have no plans to retire, so I'll be knocking on your doors for a long time to come yet!
