The Environment Agency in England is giving grants of £1.3 million to 37 communities who are at a high risk of flooding.
Up to 500 households will be helped by an Environment Agency scheme, as grants of £1.3 million are going to 37 communities to install flood barriers and airbrick covers to protect these high-risk properties. This is the second batch of funding that has been allocated to protect communities across the country. Earlier this year, £2 million went to towards 600 households across Yorkshire, Liverpool and Kent.
Following the devastating floods in Eamont Bridge, Cumbria in 2009, a grant was provided for 40 properties. This allowed the installation of door guards, airbrick covers, and non-return valves/pumps to happen and prevent any future flood damage.

Severe flooding caused the closure of shopping centres & businesses
Residents have been applying for grant money to protect their homes and there have been a number of successful applicants. £85,000 went to help Pickering protect 20 properties and 43 properties in Cornwall (who also received a further £29,000 from the local council). Existing works are underway and have received a new grant to speed up completion and protect another 600 houses.

Effects of flooding in the UK
Over the next four years, £2.1 billion will be spent on the country's flood defences and coastal erosion, putting us in the best possible position in preparation for potential flooding. Homeowners can help to protect their property by installing various flood defences if they do not meet the vulnerability criteria. However the funding system has been reformed so that schemes can be increased to allow people a greater choice of what protection they need against floods in their area.
A recent proposal in Bathampton, Bath aims to ease the risk of flooding in the city centre with a £5 million dry reservoir. The Bath and North East Somerset Council, were in agreement that due to flooding risks, an area of land between the Bath Spa Railway Station and Western Riverside was not being used to its full potential. In order to protect the Bath city centre, a reservoir is to be created upstream to intercept excess water from the River Avon, allowing houses and businesses to flourish along the riverside. Flexseal couplings can be applied to help with the proposed developments throughout the country and at the Bathampton reservoir by connecting the drainage and pipe infrastructures together. The remodelling of the area will boost the local economy, and the basin at Bathampton will stop flooding coming in from Wiltshire.
